Frequently asked questions about the This I Believe project, educational opportunities and more If gratitude is salve for the soul, then forgiveness is most certainly the antibiotic. In my 38 years on this planet, I have been violated in nearly every possible way imaginable. I do not make this statement lightly. There was a time when the sheer weight of those words should have killed me. Instead, I believe the only reason I am alive today is because somewhere along my path of life I became brave enough to forgive. Before I truly learned to forgive of the wrongs hoisted upon me, anger and sadness were the only two emotions I had even the slightest ability to demonstrate.
Hanging onto the slights felt much safer than venturing out into the great unknown of freedom forgiving another might afford. The simple truth is: I got tired. Lugging the baggage of ancient history around is exhausting. I was constantly waiting for the carousel of chaos to stop, when I power to get off the ride all along. The healing power of forgiveness lay dormant inside me until I acquired the self awareness to actually utilize it. After wading through the muck of ancient history, I finally mustered the courage to forgive all the trespasses that nurtured indescribable shame. The forgiveness did not come all at once, but rather, in waves over extended periods. I forgive my mother for not leaving an abusive relationship. Fear made her stay. I forgive my daddy for giving into his demons.
He forgot I idolized him. I forgive the man who chose me not because I was special, but because I was the little girl who seemed the most vulnerable. I forgive my parents for not teaching me how to cook or ride a bike. I forgive the one who claimed I would never amount to anything. I forgive the shopping trip for the prom dress I took alone and the trip down the aisle my dad and I could have taken together. Given enough time and self examination I became able to speak the words that had eluded me. Forgiveness is the cure for a long memory. My belief in forgiveness has allowed me to give of myself without giving myself away.
It is this belief that allowed me to stop behaving like a victim of my circumstances, and to begin living as a survivor despite them.
